SC Magdeburg as an economic factor - SLC study reveals regional economic effects totalling 22 million euros for the city and region

"Image boost and appeal"- A recent study by SLC Management shows: The regional economic effects of SC Magdeburg amount to a total of 22 million euros - a figure that underlines the club's immense appeal beyond the pitch.

On 19 February 2025, the report for SC Magdeburg and 1. FC Magdeburg [detailed report HERE] was presented at a press conference with Jens Jaschinski (Director Consultancy, SLC Management), Martin Geisthardt (Managing Director, 1. FC Magdeburg), Dr Jörg Biastoch (President, 1. FC Magdeburg) and Marc-Henrik Schmedt (Managing Director, SC Magdeburg) in Magdeburg (in the photo from left to right).

So SC Magdeburg is not only successful in sporting terms, but is also an important economic factor: as an employer, tenant, client for regional companies, retailers and as a platform for advertising and sponsorship. The club also assumes a social responsibility that goes far beyond sport.

The study was based on the 2023/2024 season and the current 2024/2025 season in the DAIKIN Handball Bundesliga. As part of the study, fans of SC Magdeburg, visiting fans of other clubs and a representative sample of the population were surveyed. Various effects were analysed, including employment, gastronomy, the hotel industry, turnover, investment, CSR commitment, tax, awareness and image. Magdeburg and the region benefit particularly in the areas of image & awareness, turnover and employment.

Marc-Henrik Schmedt, Managing Director, SC Magdeburg: "It is very valuable to analyse the charisma and added value generated by the two major Magdeburg clubs. I was very impressed by the depth of the analysis. It has now been proven once again that the partnership-based cooperation with the municipality and the state is bearing fruit. We also offer a platform again and again with our international presence."

Simone Borris, Mayor of the City of Magdeburg: "It is important for the clubs to be able to show what significance they have for the city of Magdeburg. [...] The figures themselves and also this breakdown from the survey, which once again makes it clear that the people who come to Magdeburg to watch matches also stay here and, above all, come back and also the proportion of the image gain for the city, that surprised me to a certain extent. But that also clearly shows me that the sports campus in Magdeburg really is important and should remain here - with the necessary development that we naturally have to implement. That is the task facing the city."

Prof. Dr Alfons Madeja, Scientific Director, SLC Management: "This study provides an answer to the social and economic importance of a major handball club like SC Magdeburg for the city and the region. The calculated value clearly shows the importance of handball not only in popular sport, but also in professional sport. In particular, the club's image impact on the city should be emphasised. Thanks to its international successes in recent years, SC Magdeburg has developed into an ambassador for the city that is recognised beyond Germany's borders. The report has succeeded in clearly quantifying the significance that was often assumed but never really tangible. The special position that SC Magdeburg holds for the city and the region, both in terms of its external image and as a relevant economic factor, is thus clearly illustrated in figures."
