SLC Insights on sports betting sponsorship | 70.2% of fans want a ban
For years, the involvement of betting providers and online casinos in sport, and in the Bundesliga in particular, has been the subject of debate and controversy. Be it at "political level" about the necessary licenses and the associated advertising rights - or at "club and fan level" about the gap between additional income and moral standards; because: gambling addiction is a major issue in Germany - many people are affected or at risk. And yet most Bundesliga soccer clubs have a partner from the gambling industry. The betting and gambling industry is therefore one of the biggest sponsors in the Bundesliga.
SLC has been monitoring this topic since the beginning as part of ongoing target group-specific surveys. It can be seen that the acceptance of betting providers as partners of clubs continues to decline. This is also reflected in the values of the annually published "Shirt Sleeve Study" by SLC, in which the acceptance and suitability of this sector has now fallen to just 13.9%.Against this background and the developments this season:- On the one hand, VfB Stuttgart and Hertha BSC "win" a betting provider as their main and jersey sponsor,
- on the other hand, 1. FSV Mainz 05 and FC St. Pauli are the first clubs in the Bundesliga to forego betting providers as partners,
SLC has addressed this issue.
For this purpose, more than 5,600 soccer fans were surveyed in Germany's only representative Bundesliga panel with registered participants from all clubs.
The conclusion? The majority of fans are against betting providers in soccer. After the collapse of the DFL investor deal, is soccer now losing its next source of income?
The most important results at a glance:
- 70.2% of Bundesliga fans would like to see a ban on sports betting
- 73.8% think it is good that clubs such as Mainz 05 or St. Pauli already do without betting providers as partners
- 95.9% see a tendency for sports betting to have a negative impact on people
- 72.0% of Bundesliga fans think it is good that there are companies that are committed to helping injured parties in order to recover lost money.
